If it's any help, there are .ncml files that do variable-aggregations of the 
PSD 20C data here:

IDV takes a moment to load these URLs, since it has to read all the headers 
hgt.1962.nc, air.1962.nc, etc. 
But then it acts like one dataset with all the variables, which can be 
convenient.
