      ANOTHER MILESTONE IN THE AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEM
/ASOS/ PROGRAM WILL BE REACHED ON FEBRUARY 27... 1997 WHEN THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE /NWS/ AND THE FEDERAL AVIATION
ADMINISTRATION /FAA/ COMMISSION THE FAA-SPONSORED ASOSS AT:
 
MEEKER AIRPORT /KEEO/
MEEKER... COLORADO
 
GARFIELD COUNTY REGIONAL AIRPORT /KRIL/
RIFLE... COLORADO
 
TWIN FALLS-SUN VALLEY REGIONAL JOSLIN FIELD /KTWF/
TWIN FALLS... IDAHO
 
   THE COMMISSIONINGS WILL OCCUR AT APPROXIMATELY 1800UTC.  THIS
WILL BRING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COMMISSIONED ASOSS TO 364 /227 NWS
SITES AND 137 FAA SITES/.  COMMISSIONING OF THESE SITES MEANS
THAT THE ASOSS WILL PRODUCE AUTOMATED... AROUND-THE-CLOCK SURFACE
AVIATION OBSERVATIONS.
 
     THE NWS FORECAST OFFICE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE SITES... AS
WELL AS THE ASOS OPERATIONS AND MONITORING CENTER /800-242-8194/
IN SILVER SPRING... MARYLAND... WILL MONITOR ASOS PRODUCTS AND
COORDINATE MAINTENANCE ACTIONS AS NEEDED.  NOTE: BECAUSE ASOS
OBSERVATIONAL FORMATS ARE DIFFERENT FROM MANUAL OBSERVATIONAL
FORMATS... AUTOMATED DECODER PROGRAMS MAY REQUIRE SOFTWARE
MODIFICATIONS.
