NATIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION MESSAGE 97-27
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HEADQUARTERS WASHINGTON DC
130 PM EDT WED OCT 15 1997

TO: NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE /NWS/ EMPLOYEES...NWS PRODUCT
           USERS

FROM: LOUIS W. UCCELLINI...DIRECTOR...OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY

SUBJECT: REDEPLOYMENT OF TWO WEATHER DATA BUOYS OFF THE TEXAS
COAST...NEAR THE END OF OCTOBER 1997

THE WEATHER DATA BUOYS FOR STATIONS 42019 AND 42020 ARE BEING
PREPARED FOR REDEPLOYMENT WITH FUNDS PROVIDED TO THE NATIONAL
WEATHER SERVICE FROM NOAA. THESE STATIONS WERE PUT INTO PLACE
ORIGINALLY FOR A NON-METEOROLOGICAL STUDY BY ANOTHER AGENCY.
WHEN THESE STATIONS FAILED EARLY IN 1997...AND THERE WAS NO
APPARENT SOURCE OF FUNDING TO CONTINUE SUPPORT...THESE STATIONS
WERE REMOVED. WHEN THE BUOYS ARE REDEPLOYED...THE STATION
LOCATIONS WILL BE APPROXIMATELY 20 NAUTICAL MILES CLOSER TO THE
TEXAS COAST TO BE MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE NEAR-SHORE
CONDITIONS. THE ACTUAL LOCATIONS WILL BE 27.90N 95.35W FOR
STATION 42019 AND 26.90N 96.70W FOR STATION 42020. THESE NEW
POSITIONS WILL PROVIDE THE NWS FORECASTERS WITH BETTER DATA FOR
USE IN WARNINGS AND FORECASTS. THE BUOYS ARE TENTATIVELY
SCHEDULED FOR DEPLOYMENT NEAR THE END OF OCTOBER.

END
