Dear SBUV/2 Real-time BUFR Users,

Several months ago, NESDIS started receiving NOAA-18 blinds orbits via the Svalbard receiving station, and we were able to improve our timeliness for processing these orbits. The final step in improving timeliness is to process this data as it comes in -- via granules -- versus waiting for the entire orbit to arrive. We have been testing this for many months, and the granule processor is finally going to be moved to the operational system on Dec 11. The first blind data will come in on Dec 12.

What will you see? For 2 or 3 NOAA-18 orbits a day, you will first see the data come to you in files of the exact same filename structure and format, but the files will contain about 8 minutes of data. At the end of the orbit, a full orbital BUFR file will also come to you, duplicating the granule data you have already received. For our pull users, we have been sending this data to the ddstest (test Data Distribution server) machine, which you can access exactly like you access the dds machine. Push users -- if you would like us to send you test files, let me know and I will coordinate this with Cathy Nichols immediately.

This change will impact both our Version 6 and our Version 8 products. But I should once again remind you, the Version 6 products are scheduled to be shut off on Feb 4, 2008.

If you believe this change will negatively impact your operations, please let me know as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Donna McNamara
