SUBJECT: AMENDED: UPGRADE TO CLIMATE FORECAST SYSTEM: EFFECTIVE JANUARY 22 2008

REFER TO: TECHNICAL IMPLEMENTATION NOTICE /TIN/ 07-88 TRANSMITTED ON AUG 2 2007 THIS TIN HAS BEEN AMENDED TO REFLECT A DELAY IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CFS. THIS IMPLEMENTATION HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FOR TUESDAY JANUARY 22 2008.

EFFECTIVE TUESDAY JANUARY 22 2008...AT 1200 COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME /UTC/...THE NATIONAL CENTERS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PREDICTION /NCEP/ WILL UPGRADE THE CFS.

MODELING SYSTEM CHANGES:

- UPGRADE THE LAG TIME OF THE CFS FORECAST MODEL FROM THE
 CURRENT 8-DAY LAG TO A 1-DAY LAG.
- ADD 2 MEMBERS TO THE CURRENT 2 MEMBERS FOR A TOTAL OF 4 MEMBERS. THE 2 NEW MEMBERS WILL BE RUN AT THE SAME RESOLUTION AND SAME FORECAST LENGTH.
- INCREASE THE DEPTH OF THE GLOBAL OCEAN DATA ASSIMILATION SYSTEM
/GODAS/ FROM THE CURRENT 750 METERS TO 2175 METERS. PARALLEL DATA SETS ARE AVAILABLE ON THE NCEP FTP SERVER AT THE LINK BELOW. NCEP ENCOURAGES ALL USERS TO EVALUATE THE DATA SETS TO ENSURE THEIR SYSTEMS ARE PREPARED FOR THE UPCOMING CHANGE. /USE LOWERCASE LETTERS/

THESE ELEMENTS MAY CHANGE WITH FUTURE NCEP MODEL IMPLEMENTATIONS. NCEP WILL MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO ALERT USERS TO THESE CHANGES BEFORE IMPLEMENTATION.
