SUBJECT: Scheduled Operational Changes and Upgrades

____________________________________________

---- SOFTWARE IMPLEMENTATIONS ----

The following item will be implemented at 12Z on Monday, 23 March:

148. NAWIPS - Systems NCOSRV, COMPUTEFARM. (Plummer, NCO). This change adds information to the GEMPAK / NAWIPS image identification table, imgtyp.tbl, to allow proper display and navigation of the new blended images.

        ______________________________________________

The following item will be implemented at 09Z on Tuesday, 24 March:

149. SCRIPT - IBM Job CFS_POST. (Zhu, EMC). Scripts cfs_time.sh and cfs_post.sh are being modified to correct an error which has caused incomplete ocean GRIB and pressure GRIB files in the CFS model. The files were being alerted for dissemination in the cfs_post.sh script, but additional fields were being added to these files in the cfs_time.sh script. The alert has been moved to the "cfs_time.sh" step.

          ______________________________________________

The following items will be implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 24 March:

150. DBNET - System NOMADS. (Freeman, NCO). The gens1x1.ctl template file on the NOMADS hosts will be modified to define only one member. This change will reduce the size of the GrADS index file to reflect only the single member that is actually mapped, instead of containing undefined values for the other 19 members.

151. DBNET - System NOMADS. (Freeman, NCO). DBNet changes are being made to begin creating daily RTOFS control files on NOMADS. The hourly and daily files are also being placed in separate directories.

152. SCRIPT - IBM Job JPROD_CLEANUP.XX, where XX=00,12. (Mabe, NCO). The cleanup scripts are being modified to keep more NAWIPS gridded data in /com/nawips/prod on the CCS for the GFS, UKMET, ECMWF and GDAS models.

---- OPERATIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS ----

1. The transition to the IBM Power6 system has begun. We are currently in a moratorium for CCS changes through approximately 1 July 2009.

As usual, changes to resolve operational problems will be accepted throughout the moratorium.

2. NCEP Central Operations (NCO) is preparing the WWB 5th floor swing-space for NCWCP testing. The WWB swing-space will be provisioned with a scaled-down version of the NCWCP data center. NCWCP future tenants will use the swing-space to test operational applications and processes in preparation for the WWB-NCWCP transition.

The overview of the schedule is:

* Nov – Dec 2008: NCO provisions WWB 5th floor swing-space with a scaled-down version of the NCWCP data center and NCWCP LAN

* Jan – Apr 2009: NCWCP future tenants test operational applications and processes using the WWB swing-space

* May – Sep 2009: NCO leads the IT provisioning for the NCWCP IT infrastructure

* Sep - Dec 2009: Tenants move to NCWCP, vacate WWB

3. Upcoming major changes to NCEP's production suite and details on any product or timing changes associated with upcoming implementations can be viewed at the following website:

http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/changes/

Test data for each of these proposed changes should be available six weeks prior to implementation. Anyone wishing to receive formal notice of the final pre-implementation testing and the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed changes can subscribe to the Model Evaluation mailing list via:
