Topic: *NOAA-19 AMSU-A and MHS*

Date/Time Issued: *JUNE** 30, 2009 1500 UTC*

Product(s) or Data Impacted*:** NOAA-19 AMSU-A and MHS Level 1b; TOVS; MIRS; MSPPS*

Date/Time of Initial Impact: *JUNE 27, 2009 *

Date/Time of Expected End: *Unknown*

Length of Event: *TBD
*

Impacts on Users and Significance: *NESDIS has evaluated the impact of the NOAA-19 AMSU-A and MHS anomalies on the TOVS sounding products and the analysis did not show any significant differences. Therefore, at this point ESPC will not suspend distribution of the products. ESPC also concluded that there has not been any significant impacts on the MIRS products. All other AMSU and MHS instruments are operating normally.*

*NESDIS has been in contact with the National Weather Service (NWS) National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) and they have adjusted the model parallel assimilation to remove NOAA-19 AMSU-A channel 8.*

User Actions: *Users are encouraged to review all products using NOAA-19 AMSU-A and MHS level 1b.*

Details/Specifics of Change: NESDIS Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) has detected several anomalies with the NOAA-19 AMSU-A (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit) and MHS (Microwave Humidity Sensor). The AMSU-A channels 3 and 8 are showing high errors, as well as the MHS channels 3 and 4. NESDIS STAR, OSO, and OSDPD are currently investigating the issue. Preliminary analysis indicates the AMSU-A and MHS errors began around June 27, 2009.
