COMET CASE 041 "Southern California Severe Weather 2-3 September, 1998" Now Freely Available

--------COMET CASE STUDY 041--Southern California Severe Weather--------- 
                                 (2-3 September, 1998)
SUMMARY: On 2 September 1998, a series of strong thunderstorms affected Southern California, bringing strong winds, lightning and heavy rains. The winds knocked down power lines and trees across the area, while the heavy rains resulted in widespread flash flooding across the valley. In addition, a funnel cloud was reported by a helicopter pilot near Pomona, CA. Lightning strikes also started several wildfires, the largest fire consumed 1,500 acres of grass east of Bakersfield. OBJECTIVE: This case expands our severe weather coverage to southern California and allows an in-depth study of dynamics producing these conditions.

The next case study to be released will be "Colorado Fire Weather" of June 11-12 2002. This is the first case developed by the Unidata Program Center. The UPC is continuing to create and distribute case studies on a regular basis, to help fill the void left by the reduction of COMET case studies.
UPC welcomes your comments on these case studies, along with contributions for future case studies.
The release of the Colorado Fire Weather case is anticipated within the next 4 weeks.
