Re: noaaport

Hi Dan:

Sorry it took me a little while to get back to you. I was on vacation
and am just starting to catch up on my mail.

I think it is safe to say that while we are very enthusiastic about the
idea of adding a western region NOAAport to our top tier ring, we are
not prepared right now to make a monetary commitment to purchase a
system without opening up the idea to our community at-large. We
haven't decided to or not to do that yet.

We are interested, however, in knowing what your plans are (or were
before we contacted you). There may be ways that we can both improve
our situations by sharing ideas, knowledge and DATA! For example, we
have constructed or are working to complete construction of our own 4
port ingest system (not sure exactly the status of this right now). We
would be happy to share with you the information that we have on this to
help get you the most for your money. We'd also like to talk about
connecting your NOAAport to our top tier ring. My understanding is that
this would all but guarantee you and your downstream sites fail over in
the case of outages on your end. It also improves reliability to the
Unidata community as a whole, which is a great thing for all of us. Of
course to make this work there are apparently requirements on the type
of system or software that you run (but I'll leave that for our
technical crew).

In terms of your question about staff commitment to such a system. Our
experience has been that once you are up and running, things are pretty
stable, but need attention in fits and spurts. I certainly don't think
that most organizations would have to augment staff to operate such a
system.

I'd like to hear where you all are in getting approvals for
installation, dish location, purchase etc. I think we should then talk
about how we can help each other. We're always open-minded here and
think there might be ways to make this a "win" for both of us.

Thanks for your interest, and let me know what you think,
Joanne
