The LDM is software that is used for sending/receiving data products
from/to cooperating sites. If you had a site that was willing to feed
you data, then the LDM would be sufficient for getting data that GEMPAK
decoders could then convert into usable formats for GEMPAK. Unidata
does not provide data to individuals or commercial entities. There are
several commercial organizations that do provide data access
capabilities and some of those are compatible with our LDM technology.
The NWS maintains a web page that lists vendors of NOAAPORT satellite
receive systems that would provide the datastreams that you are seeking.

The IDD is a network of cooperating LDMs. Data of one kind or another
is "injected" into the IDD at an LDM site and it then is sent to sites
that have been allowed to request the data from that machine. In turn,
third tier sites may be allowed to request data from the second tier LDM
sites and so on.

As stated above, Unidata does not provide subscription to the IDD to
individuals or commercial entities. There are several commercial
organizations that do sell systems that can ingest the data being
freely broadcast by the NWS, NOAAPORT. It is those (and other) data
that are conveyed in our IDD to universities.

That is correct. And the IDD is the collection of those machines that
are moving data among cooperating sites.
