Re: 20040212: Imagery, 12 km Eta-ADMIN NOTICE NOUS72 KNCF (fwd)

Hi Jim,

I've copied Julie Hayes, NWS, on this message, and hopefully she can advise us on the status or forward the email to the focal point for the issue.

Thanks,
Linda

Linda,

I haven't seen the new 12-km ETA fields yet on our NOAAPORT TG channel
and haven't seen any status updates. The new fields were supposed to be
turned on yesterday according the the message below, but my files are
their normal size and the grids are the old grids. Have you had any
updates?

Jim

PLEASE PASS TO MIC, HIC, ESA, ITO, AND SOO
SUBJ: COMPOSITE GOES IMAGERY / 12KM RESOLUTION ETA MODEL
COMPOSITE IMAGERY
ON FEBRUARY 25 AT 1500Z, NCF AND NESDIS WILL MOVE COMPOSITE GOES IMAGERY
TO THE COMMUNICATION ROUTE CURRENTLY USED BY GOES SOUNDER PRODUCTS TO
REACH THE AWIPS SATELLITE BROADCAST NETWORK. MOVING GMS/METEOSTAT/GOES
IMAGERY TO THIS MORE EFFICIENT ROUTE WILL ENSURE MORE RELIABLE DATA
DELIVERY. THE HEADERS FOR THESE PRODUCTS ARE TICF01 KNES, TICF03 KNES,
AND TICF04 KNES. THEY ARE UPLINKED EVERY 3 HOURS, BEGINNING AT 0057 UTC.
THERE SHOULD BE NO INTERRUPTION TO DATA FLOW AS A RESULT OF THIS
TRANSITION. IF THERE IS ANY DIFFICULTY IN RECEIPT OR PROCESSING OF
GMS/METEOSTAT/GOES COMPOSITE PRODUCTS
FOLLOWING THIS CHANGE, PLEASE CONTACT NCF AT (301) 713-9344.
12KM RESOLUTION ETA MODEL
ADDITIONAL 12KM RESOLUTION ETA MODEL GRIDS WILL BE ADDED TO THE SBN'S TG
CHANNEL ON FEBRUARY 18 AT APPROXIMATELY 1530Z. THE NEW GRIDS EXTEND THE
RUN TIME OF THE EXISTING SBN ETA GRID SETS FROM 48 AND 60 HOURS, TO 84
HOURS. THIS ADDITION WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE VOLUME OF DATA
ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. DETAILS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS
CHANGE ARE AS FOLLOWS: Excerpt from RC AB666

1. Grid 218 (12KM Eta 12 CONUS)

2. Surface Parameter set:
   2 M Temperature
   2 M Relative Humidity
   10 M u-wind
   10 M v-wind
   MSLP
   MSLP (Eta model reduction)
   Station Pressure
   Total Precipitation*
   CAPE
   CIN
   Precipitable Water
   Convective Precipitation*
   Listed Index
   Helicity
 * these parameters have one less time increment since cumulative from
time zero.

3. Forecast Intervals
AWIPS currently gets Eta 12 grids out to 60 hours at 00 and 12 UTC,
and out to 48 hours at 06 and 18 UTC (all four cycles output at three
hour intervals). Sustaining this granularity out to 84 hours
gives 29 total "valid times," with the last eight being new:

   00, 03, 06, 09, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42,
   45, 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 63, 66, 69, 72, 75, 78, 81, and 84 Hrs.

Units are hours from model initialization time.

4. The four Eta 12 model run times are 00, 06, 12 & 18 UTC.
5. Data Volume: The increase from 21 to 29 valid times (* parameters
ABOVE increase from 20 to 28 valid times) increases the daily data
volume by 176 MB (52.6%), from 334 to 510 MB.
The NWS TG shall provide these products in very-near-real time to the
AWIPS NCF for uplink on the SBN's TG channel.
