20050526: What can be done now?

Ted,

There are no restrictions on redistribution of Level II data. Unidata
is not responsible for establishing any redistribution mechanisms
to non-university sites. You can obtain it through any other site that
is able to serve you. The economics are that most sites have to pay for
their network usage, and so anyone that chooses to make that data available
may also have some form of cost recovery or other quid-pro-quo exchange
(collaboration, hosting an internship position, etc.) depending on the type
or mission of whomever you contact.

Unidata makes its noaaport reception and LDM software available as-is
which you can obtain free of charge, though we don't have resources to
provide support non-university users, and if you were to use hardware/OS other
than what we documented then you really would be on your own (or have to
rely on other users out there).

As for decoders, GRIB files from NWS ftp servers can be downloaded by ftp
and decoded. Other text products etc are dependant on having bulletin
delimeters- which some sites might strip off for posting on a web page etc.
Other than that, the range of decoders is pretty extensive.
