EPS embeds thumbnails into the files (and are not ascii readable).
You would have to use one of the conversion programs available to
convert to EPS- which seems to be machine dependent on bitmaps ans things.

Ghostscript may be able to do the conversion. There are also programs
that provide postscript drivers for macs and PCs which allow you to
"open" from the file menu (I purchased one years ago for my Win 3.1 system
and it worked- though slow).
