Indeed, I grabbed the current cvs source of XFree86 (4.2.99.1 as of
this afternoon, just the xc section) and built it. I just installed
it over the existing RedHat X stuff, modified the 'startx' program
since RH looks for the xinitrc file in a different place than the
XF86 default, and it ran like a charm.

Under twm there are 160 free color cells, under fvwm2 there are 150.
More than enough for garp/ntl in both cases. gnome still leaves 0
free colors, big surprise there..

Anyways, thanks for the help and hopefully this will make it into
the RH distribution or patchset 'real soon now'. I don't know a thing
about creating RPM files or I'd volunteer to create such a beast to
upgrade on RH systems.  As it is, I think I can just tar up the 
/usr/X11R6/[bin/lib/include] directories and distribute to other 7.3
boxes that way.
