20040524: RE: 20040505: NIDS display in general

Gempak users,

In response to requests for the capability of displaying some of the
text and graphic information available in the NIDS products not included
within the radial or raster image portion of the data block, I have
created a program GPNIDS which is essentially an expanded capability
version of GPVAD which I previously released.

I have placed a binary/source combined tarfile for gpnids at:
http://my.unidata.ucar.edu/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewsdownload&sid=9

Linux, Freebsd, and Solaris (sparc and X86) executables are included
with the necessary pdf and hlp files, as well as the source for building
under GEMPAK5.7.2p2/unidata/programs/gpnids.

At this point, it is a stand alone program since the image display
portion of GEMPAK will require modification within the device driver
code at a different level to handle NIDS products that
don't have an image, or are in graph coordinates (like the NVW).

I have tested the program with the NCR, N1P, NTP products in the
NOAAPORT data stream for OUTPUT of the tablular and alphanumeric data,
as well as the NVW vad wind graph.

I have also tested the program with the following NEXRAD products
from the NWS ftp site for overlay, eg:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/tg/radfiles.html
    ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/SL.us008001/DF.of/DC.radar/

storm tracking information (DS.58sti)
tornado vortex signature (DS.61tvs)
mesocyclone detection (DS.p60-m)
Hail index (DS.p59hi)

To integrate these overlays with NMAP2, you can use the VG driver
from GPNIDS and import the information into NMAP2 that way.

Additional features/symbols control etc. will be added in the future,
but the basic start is there.
