[IDV #JNH-694932]: trying to open a file from an opendap server

Leonard-

You can't pass in any constraint information from the OPeNDAP URL.  The IDV 
will allow you to do the field selection and subsetting once you've loaded the 
data. Try loading in:

http://acdisc.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov/opendap/Aqua_AIRS_Level3/AIRX3STD.005/2009/AIRS.2009.08.14.L3.RetStd001.v5.2.2.0.G09229093014.hdf

to the URL chooser.  The Topography field is under the 2D grid set of fields.
