[LDM #EBA-558540]: LDM v.6.11.5 compilation failure [Mac OS X v.10.8.4]

Ah! That would cause the problem.

The GNU Automake tools are used to release-engineer the LDM package and they 
insist on creating a tarball without an "src" directory. This is why the 
instructions for building the package 
<http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/ldm/ldm-current/basics/source-install-steps.html>
 create that directory using either pax(1) or a somewhat complicated command.

It's a pain in the butt, but the benefits of using those tools outweigh their 
costs, on average.

Kudos for figuring this out.
