Since I am not a Vis5D expert, please accept the following as things
I would try :-)

The first thing I did was to look at the invocation syntax for Vis5D:

Usage: vis5d file.v5d [options]

Options:

  -alpha
   Use alpha blending instead of screen door transparency.

  -area N 
   Specifies the first McIDAS AREA file in a sequence to display in the 3-D box.

  -box alon alat ahgt 
   Set aspect ratio of the 3-D box (longitude:latitude:height).
   Example: vis5d LAMPS.v5d -box 4 2 1

 ...

This makes it look like imagery in AREA file format can be included in
the Vis5D display by specifying the '-area' flag.  To test this I will
need to build Vis5D on my Sun SPARC E450.

Could you make one of the images you have been trying to import
into Vis5D available to me (ftp, web link, ADDE, etc.)?  This would
help me see the problem more clearly.  Thanks.

Can you describe the problems you have been having with McIDAS?  Perhaps
this would provide clues that should be explored further.
