[McIDAS #CQU-239775]: Make install - Mcidas

Hi Daniella,

re:

:-)

re:

Hmm...

re:

Interesting. I am guessing that you are working in the KDE environment on
a Linux machine. Is this true?

There were some known issues with McIDAS running under KDE that I thought had
been fixed. One of the biggest issues was exactly what you are describing:
The McIDAS image window, 'mcimage', keeps growing for some reason, and will
eventually crash after it has exhausted memory. This problem, however, was not
noted to occur only when using the MCGUI or GUI graphical user interfaces.

Very interesting. The code for re-parenting the McIDAS image window is
virtually
identical in the MCGUI and GUI, so I would not expect one to work while the
other does not.

Questions:

- what operating system is running on your machine?

Please send me the output of 'uname -a'

- what is the windowing environment you are using, KDE or Gnome

The difference between the MCGUI and GUI is one of approach to providing an
interface
to the underlying McIDAS routines. GUI was developed by the principal owners of
McIDAS, the Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) of the University of
Wisconsin
at Madison. I developed the MCGUI interface for Unidata community users.
Those users
(i.e., you) are free to use the interface you like best.

re:
> What could make MCGUI window crash?

I believe that it is the McIDAS image window that is crashing, and this would
be caused
by it growing without bound.

Recommendation:

- if you are running in the KDE environment under Linux, try switching to the
Gnome
environment. My experience is that there are no problems with either
graphical
user interface under Gnome, but there are sometimes problems under KDE.

> Thank you again

No worries.

Cheers,

Tom
