Yes.  If you followed the Unidata way of setting up McIDAS decoding,
you would do the following to turn off decoder-creation of GRID
files:

<as 'mcidas'>
cd $MCDATA
decinfo.k SET DMGRID INACTIVE

After doing this, wait for up to a minute and then verify that
the GRID data monitor is not running:

ps -eaf | grep DM

You should not see DMGRID running.
