Uh, except I just tried to check this example:

with the ToolsUI 4.3:
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/netcdf-java/v4.3/webstart/netCDFtools.jnlp

as a PointFeature type and it bombed.

I started something similar last May... may be a bit outdated by now:

It has .nc and .cdl files for a good number of the conventions.

I'll work on getting the rest in there by next week.

I'll need to rename some of the files to reflect the CF 1.6 spec 
(http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/documents/cf-conventions/1.6/cf-conventions.html#appendix-examples-discrete-geometries)
  rather than the old webpage which they were based on 
(https://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/trac/wiki/PointObservationConventions)

Excellent.

Now once upon a time, there was a zipfile collection of sample NcML files, one 
for each of the different discrete sampling geometry (timeSeriesProfile, 
trajectoryProfile, timeSeries, etc).

Is there an updated version  for NetCDF-Java 4.3.4/CF-1.6?

It would be very useful!
