When you say "open it locally"
you are, I assume, referring to
a netcdf-4 formatted .nc file.
This works with netcdf-c ok because
the names do not have '/' in them.
It is only when accessing a file
with groups on a server that you will see
slashes in the DAP dds names and that is
what causes the problems.

If you use the Java client it should work ok.
A netcdf-c client (like ncdump or nccopy) will
not work if the original file is in fact
a netcdf-4 formatted file.
