Re: [LDM #ZGC-437176]: Dealing with unreadable GRIB files



Hi all:

The short answer is that version 4.3 makes everything ok. The two files look identical, because duplicates are ignored. 4.2 is broken and we cannot support it anymore for GRIB files.

As to why the ldm is getting duplicates, likely the pqact is the problem.

If I look at the first file with "wgrib2", eveything looks good:

But the 2nd one retrieved by LDM from the IDD doesn't proceed nicely
from 0 to 192 hours -- there are a bunch of duplicated records
inserted throughout the file, causing the time stamp to not proceed
monotonically, and resulting in a much bigger file.  This one can't be
read via the opendap link on TDS (and therefore produces a zero length
grib index file).

The LDM grib file is 6.2GB, while if I download the grib2 file from the
TDS:

it is only 3.8GB.

What the heck?

I guess I need "wgrib" or something to check these out?

Understandable, that is not OK!

This is an error rate of about 10%.

Well, closer to 2% (4 runs per day), unless you are only requesting
one synoptic time per day, but even 2% is far greater than one would expect,
we see generally 99.98 reliability..if not better.

TCP unreliability is much, much less than 2%. It's far more likely that
there's something wrong with the decoder or the GRIB file.

Do you have something that can check the validity of a GRIB file?
