[netCDF #YFO-861586]: nc_inq crashes

One more thought. It is probable that both the netdf-c library
and the SD code are using the same hdf-5 library underneath.
You might try rebuilding your hdf5 library as thread-safe
(there is an hdf5 ./configure option for that).
