I would recommend 2 smaller hard drives (preferrably SCSI).  Make
the first one 8 Gb which will hold the OS and programs, and use
the other for data storage (volatile stuff).  There is a problem
with Solaris and Linux accessing all sectors of a boot drive 
larger than 8 Gb, so that is why I suggest a smaller boot drive.

These others sound fine.  Make sure any video cards are supported
by the operating system you are going to use.

You might also want to consider an internal ZIP or Jazz drive for
backing off datasets for case studies.  Since Rich wants to have
an archive of sat data, he could use this to store things.
