FWIW, I've found that The Weather and Climate Toolkit is very useful for accessing satellite data: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/wct
G-16 and NEXRAD data are directly accessible from the cloud via the NOAA Big Data Project (http://www.noaa.gov/big-data-project). CLASS requests can also be accessed by entering the order number under the CLASS tab. WCT also makes it possible to export data in a variety of formats including NetCDF (Gridded or Native).
