The NSF Institute for Geospatial Understanding through an Integrative Discovery Environment (I-GUIDE) enables transformative discovery and innovation for tackling fundamental scientific and societal challenges that are at the cusp of achieving significant breakthroughs by harnessing the vast, diverse, and ever-growing corpus of geospatial data. The week of August 7-11 2023, I-GUIDE will lead a Summer School on Convergence Science in Action in Boulder, CO. From the announcement:
Certain complex and compelling societal problems require a convergent research approach, when knowledge, tools, and modes of thinking from multiple disciplines are strategically integrated and merged. About 25 graduate students and early career scholars will collaborate with project members of I-GUIDE to develop novel solutions to complex problems that rely on computation- or data-intensive geospatial data science. The participants will experience the collaborative and professional interactions that are key to comprehensively working on convergence science problems, including geoethics, geo-enabling reproducible and open science, geovisualization, and geoAI and spatial data science via cloud and high-performance computing.
This year our application areas will include topics such as climate change, biodiversity, water security, sustainable development, and implications of these as studied via social science data.
The summer school is intended for graduate students or early-career scholars new to geospatial data science who want to learn more about integrating it into their research, or who are already working with data-intensive geospatial science approaches and want to develop interdisciplinary skills and build new connections with others in related fields.
I-GUIDE will offer travel awards through the generous support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) for those participating in the Summer School. Awardees will have their travel and meal costs covered and shared hotel accommodations provided for the duration of the program.
Applications must be received by March 31, 2023. See I-GUIDE Summer School 2023 for details and to apply for admission.
