David Knight of the University at Albany — SUNY's Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences has been awarded the 2012 Russell L. DeSouza Award by the Unidata Users committee. The DeSouza Award honors "individuals whose energy, expertise, and active involvement enable the Unidata Program to better serve the geosciences."

Dr. Knight's contributions to the Unidata community date back to the early days of the program, when active involvement was central to the program's success. He has served on both of Unidata's governing committees, providing important perspectives on the data and software needs of university researchers and educators. Since the early 1990's, Dr. Knight has managed SUNY-Albany's distribution of lightning data from the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN) to members of the university community.

The 2012 DeSouza Award will be presented to Dr. Knight during the Unidata Users committee's Spring meeting (2-3 April 2012). As part of the award ceremony, Dr. Knight will present brief remarks on his views of the importance of collaboration and cooperation in the Unidata community, about his involvement, and about how he and his colleagues in Albany are currently using Unidata software and services.

A recording of the award ceremony and Dr. Knight's talk will be available following the Users committee meeting.
