Sometime Unidata Program Center software developer and MetPy Mondays host John Leeman runs a consulting and instrumentation company. Alongside Leeman Geophysical's many other activities, in 2021 they began hosting a week-long Generalist Electromechanics for Applied Researchers (GEARS) workshop for about 20 students. They're holding the workshop again in 2022: the event will be held August 1-5 in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
The 2021 workshop covered topics in electronics, fluid power, mechanical design, and programming, rounding things out with hands-on shop work and tackling real-world problems experienced by scientists deploying instruments in the field. (If you're interested, read the summary of the 2021 workshop.)
The 2022 workshop will welcome up to 30 participants, and expects to cover topics including:
- Soldering TH, SMT, Wires, and More
- Temperature Measruement
- Distance Measurement
- Pressure/Force Measurement
- DAQ Systems
- Calibration
- Design for 3D Printing
- Design for Machining
- Selecting Materials
- Field Deployment Considerations
- Arduino Programming
- Troubleshooting
- Using a multimeter
- Signal conditioning
- Welding
- Control Systems
- Impedance
Registration for the 2022 GEARS workshop is open until July 6, 2022.
