NSF Unidata Update: November 2024

Upcoming deadlines to be aware of:

4 December Last day of Early Registration for the American Meteorological Society 105th Annual Meeting.
24 January Applications for the NSF Unidata 2025 Summer Student Internship program will be due. Stay tuned for a full announcement in early December.
28 March Applications for the NSF Unidata 2025 Community Equipment Awardsa program are due.

Highlights from last month:

Applications Now Open for the 2025 SEEKCommons Fellowship

The Socio-Environmental Knowledge Commons (SEEKCommons) Fellowship is an initiative to bring graduate students and early-career researchers to socio-environmental research with common technologies. The SEEKCommons project is dedicated to building pathways for horizontal collaborations across Science and Technology Studies (STS), Open Science (OS), and socio-environmental researchers and community organizers. For 2025, the program is seeking nine fellows who are currently enrolled in a graduate program, hold a postdoctoral appointment, or are a professional practitioner working in a community-based organization and who demonstrate clear alignment with the goals and objectives of the SEEKCommons project.

AWIPS Tips: Decommissioning V20 Public EDEX Server

The AWIPS team reminds you that the version 20.3.2 public EDEX Server (edex-cloud.unidata.ucar.edu) will be decommissioned at the end of 2024, as it is running on CentOS7 which reached its end of life back in June.

NSF Unidata Staff at AGU Fall 2024 Meeting

The American Geophysical Union will be conducting a hybrid in-person and virtual conference for its 2024 Fall meeting, December 9-13 2024, with live events taking place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC. Several NSF Unidata staff members will be presenting as part of the AGU Scientific Program; a schedule of their talks and posters is included in the article.

Call for Proposals: NSF Unidata 2025 Community Equipment Awards

AThe NSF Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2025 NSF Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the U.S. National Science Foundation, NSF Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the Earth Systems Sciences to join the NSF Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2025, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.

On the Developer's Blog

NSF Unidata Program Center developers write regularly on technical topics on the Unidata Developer's Blog. The ongoing MetPy Mondays series is back from its break, and discusses handling time zones and Corfidi storm motion calculations.

Governing Committee News

NSF Unidata's Users Committee met in a joint session with the Strategic Advisory Committee September 25-28, 2024. The Users Committee will meet next in the Spring of 2025.
