The Unidata Program Center's two summer student interns — Ana Castaneda Montoya from the University of Michigan and Leo Matak from the University of Houston — have come to the end of their summer appointments. After a summer of dedicated work they presented the results of their projects to the UPC staff on July 31, 2024. You can find videos of their presentations to the UPC staff on the Unidata Seminar Series page.
Ana Castaneda Montoya
Ana Castaneda Montoya came to Unidata hoping to explore a variety of projects and expand her coding skills in ways that will support her future research. She spent her summer learning about coding in Python for the atmospheric sciences and building her skill with open source software development practices.
You can read Ana's take on her summer's work in Contributing to Geoscientific Python through Metpy and Project Pythia over on the Unidata Developers' blog. You can also watch the video recording of her presentation to Unidata staff over on the Seminar Series page.
Leo Matak
Leo Matak came to Unidata to gain a deeper understanding of the netCDF file format and enhance his skills in software engineering in general and Java coding in particular. His summer's work included extending the THREDDS Data Server's capabilities for server-side virtual data processing, making it easier preprocess datasets for use in AI/ML workflows.
You can read about Leo's summer projects in Extensible NcML for AI/ML Ready Data on the THREDDS Data Server over on the Unidata Developers' blog. You can also watch the video recording of his presentation to Unidata staff over on the Seminar Series page.
Stay Tuned
The Unidata Summer Internships offer undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to work with Unidata software engineers and scientists on projects drawn from a wide variety of areas in the atmospheric and computational sciences. If you're a student thinking about internships for the summer of 2025, keep Unidata in mind. Unidata's summer internships are generally advertised in late December to early January, so be sure to check back at the end of the year. For reference, you can take a look at the Internship page.
We at the Program Center certainly enjoyed having Ana and Leo working beside us this summer, and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.
