The NOAA Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites

The NOAA Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites North Carolina (CICS-NC) is seeking a Meteorologist / Computer Scientist / Research Associate to work in Asheville, NC, in collaboration with scientists at the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).  The successful candidate will provide hands-on computer programming and software engineering support for the National Climate Model Portal (NCMP) in the development, implementation, and tools for scientific climate data access, and interoperability.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

a)     Plan, design and implement software development and web pages with an emphasis on interoperable technologies (SOA, RESTful web services, etc) for the NCMP project.

b)     Plan, develop, implement and maintain common model infrastructure applications to address climate prediction needs, e.g., initialization, climate data analysis and climate reanalysis systems, etc.

c)     Implement community cataloging capabilities to assist the development and implementation of a distributed open access web service.

d)     Advance technologies to support the NCDC GeoPortal Toolkit suite of ESRI based applications for Advanced GIS access to NCMP datasets.

e)     Plan, develop and implement evaluation and troubleshooting tools and applications to ensure accessibility and integrity of datasets and other end products.  

Minimum qualifications: M.S. in computer sciences, engineering, mathematics, meteorology, atmospheric sciences, or environmental sciences. At least 2 years experience working with in-situ climate related observations OR at least 2 years experience working in the development and/or support of large-scale physical science datasets. 2-4 years work with UNIX/Linux systems including high performance environments; demonstrated computer programming proficiency utilizing standard JAVA, PHP, Perl, Python, JavaScript, FORTRAN, C, C++, etc. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and solid interpersonal skills.
