Unidata Update: January 2017

In case you missed it — here's a recap of news from the Unidata Program Center for the month of January, 2017.

A few deadlines to be aware of:

  • Unidata summer student internship applications will be accepted until 3 February 2017.
  • Applications for 2017 Community Equipment Awards will be accepted until 31 March 2017.
  • We'd like to hear your stories about Unidata by 28 February 2017. (Not only does your story help Unidata — you can win prizes!)

NetCDF-Java library and TDS version 4.6.7 Released

The NetCDF-Java/Common Data Model (CDM) library and THREDDS Data Server (TDS) version 4.6.7 were released on January 3rd, 2017.

Unidata Staff at AMS 2017 Meeting

AMS 2017

Members of the Unidata Program Center staff attended the 97th annual American Meteorology Society meeting, 22-26 January 2017 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington. Unidata was in Booth 426 in the exhibit hall, where there were live, hands-on demonstrations of Unidata software and services, including a look at the current state of the AWIPS environment.

Call for Proposals: Unidata 2017 Community Equipment Awards

Equipment Awards

The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce the opening of the 2017 Unidata Community Equipment Awards solicitation. Created under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation, Unidata equipment awards are intended to encourage new members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds in the geosciences to join the Unidata community, and to encourage existing members to continue their active participation, enhancing the community process. For 2017, a total of $100,000 is available for awards; proposals for amounts up to $20,000 will be considered.

In preparation for a routine review of the Unidata Program by our sponsors at the National Science Foundation, we are collecting anecdotes that illustrate the ways in which Unidata's activities have benefitted you, your research, your teaching, your students, or your community.

MetPy 0.4.3 Released

MetPy

MetPy version 0.4.3 has been released. This fixes a few more minor issues in the 0.4 series.

On the Developer's Blog

Unidata Program Center developers write regularly on technical topics on the Unidata Developer's Blog. Most recently, developer Dennis Heimbigner describes a proposed cloud architecture for the THREDDS Data Server, and developer Michael James talks about how AWIPS depends on GEMPAK, and what that means for MacOS support.

Governing Committee News

Unidata's Users Committee met 26-27 September 2016, in Boulder, Colorado. The meeting summary will be available shortly. The meeting summary is available here. The next meeting is scheduled for 19-20 April 2017 in Boulder, CO.

Unidata's Strategic Advisory Committee is meeting 6-7 October 2016 in Boulder, Colorado. The meeting summary will be available shortly. The meeting summary is available here. The next meeting will be held 13-14 April 2017 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
