2010 Unidata NetCDF Workshop > The Future of netCDF
26.2 Long-term plans for Unidata data access infrastructure
Plans for two years and beyond are uncertain, but may include:
- In general, move successful netCDF-Java features into C-based
APIs:
- Plug-in extension framework for C-based APIs to support reading
other data formats through a common data model interface
- Automatic data packing using _Scale and _Offset attributes
- Read-only access through NcML, possibly via streaming communication
with a no-configuration small-footprint Java service
- Support for additional HDF5 types, including references, to
permit reading NPOESS data
- Read access to netCDF subsets requested by coordinate system
bounding boxes
- Group support in classic format
- Addition of asynchronous I/O facilities for DAP and local
access
