Jared,

It looks to me that the Jan 18 date is the day that the 'eta' and 'avn'
products will be removed, but that the 'nam' and 'gfs' are already
there now and will continue to be. 

Between now and then, either name should work on the ftp servers, but 
on or after Jan 18, the eta/avn names will not work anymore.

So, I'd have to believe that you can safely change your ftp scripts
to use 'nam' anytime.
