20000310: GRIB identifiers



Alan,

Yes, you can store the raw feed and decode it later. In fact,
you can just "cat" the data to the decoders later- 
eg: cat gribfil | dcgrib .....

Grib files do not have a pil line. The way they can be identified is
by using the PDS block with Octets 5 (model center) and 6 (process id)
which is what our pqing uses to create the /mMODEL id tag to
add to the WMOid in the LDM product ID (note, this is only 
used in the LDM id, we don't change the WMO header in the data!!!).

If the NWS would start using the assigned "KWBG" for he RUC, then
most of your problems would be solved. Ideally, you can identify
the data from the LDM rather than wait until it gets to
the decoder, since if you archive the data in its raw form- then you don't
have the benefit of passing it to the decoder. Maybe FSL would be willing to
add the model number from the GRIB PDS to their identifiers. Since they already 
have
the product ready to stick in the LDM, adding one more little access of the
PDS octets for producing the product names is very easy. In fact, for
my NOAAport system here, I actually insert the products named like:

grib/ncep/ETA_89/#211/200003090000/F024/TMP/120-90 mb above gnd/ YTQE86 KWBE 
090000

where the model center, process, grid, initial time, forecast time, parameter
and level are all used to create a more readable name with the WMO id.
