AWIPS2

Status Report: October 2011

Michael James

Strategic Focus Areas

AWIPS2 work supports the following Unidata funding proposal focus areas:

  1. Broadening participation and expanding community services
Interest is high, and would expect an increase in community participation once the UPC releases AWIPS2 to the community.
  2. Advancing data services
AWIPS2 - new software, new data flow system, I think that fits the bill.
  3. Developing and deploying useful tools
    See above.
  4. Enhancing user support services
Preparing installation and configuration documentation for the forthcoming (but still uncertain) UPC release of AWIPS2, as well as user-interface training.

Activities Since the Last Status Report

AWIPS2 Development Environment

The UPC is receiving full and complete source code of AWIPS2 from the NWS for each major release. The AWIPS2 Development Environment (ADE) gives us the ability to focus development around the unique needs of our community as opposed to NWS operational use.

    Unidata Training Workshop

AWIPS2 was used for the first time in a laboratory setting by students attending the GEMPAK/AWIPS2 Training Workshop. The two-system server/client setup showed no signs of network slowness, an encouraging result given the likelihood of university departments administering AWIPS2 in a similar manner, campus-wide.
