Status Report
Linda Miller, External Liaison
March – September 2003
Work referenced within this report is based on advocacy, community
outreach, and identifying new data sources and distribution trends within the
community, associated with "Endeavor 1: Responding to a broader and more diverse
community" and "Endeavor 2: Comprehensive Support Services, [Data services,
systems, and tools]" from the Unidata 2008 Proposal. There is overlap of external
activities in the areas of "Real-time, self-managing data flows" (Endeavor 3),
Endeavor 4: Software to analyze and visualize geoscience data", along with "Distributed,
organized collections of digital material" (Endeavor 5), and "Improved data
access infrastructure" (Endeavor 6).
Community Outreach
-
Advocacy
- Information disseminated to the Unidata community email list regarding
the possible shut-down of the Profiler network. The reaction from the
community and other concerned users resulted in coordination between the
NWS and the Forecast Systems Lab to continue the operation of the network,
and to gradually move toward planning of an integrated observing system,
which will include profilers.
- Coordinated Unidata monthly seminars. The seminars are
a mix of Unidata staff presentations, and other important activities taking
place at UCAR/NCAR and other external activities relevant to Unidata.
- March-IDV, THREDDS, VGEE-Don Murray, Ben Domenico, Rajul Pandya
- April-A brief tour through COMET with a look to the future-Tim Spangler
- May-Wavelet Transform-Based Data Compression and its Application to
Multi-Dimensional Gridded Data Sets-Ning Wang and Renate Brummer, FSL
- June–Recent Work on THREDDS and NetCDF-John Caron
- July–Differences between LDM5 and LDM6-Steve Emmerson
- August–An overview of RAP's 4DWX (4-D Weather) program, with emphasis
on globally-relocatable coupled-model applications, GIS, PDA's, and real-time
products, in support of Homeland Security-Scott Swerdlin
- September-Atmospheric Science and GIS interoperability issues: some
Data Model and Computational Interface aspects–Stefano Nativi, University
of Florence (visiting scientist)
- AMS/IIPS co-chair coordination responsibilities. Many Unidata papers were
submitted for oral and poster presentations for the meeting in Seattle in
January 2004.
Data Access and Distribution
- CONDUIT Working Group Meeting,
29 May
- Following the CONDUIT meeting, coordinated a meeting with Guy Almes to meet
with the technical staff on 30 May 2003. This meeting was based on Internet2-Abilene
collaboration with Unidata and NWS collaboration on Level II data distribution,
using LDM technology.
- 18
June WSR-88D Level II Data Distribution Meeting in Silver Spring
- Continued coordination with the NWS, the Radar Operations Center, National
Severe Storms Lab and other collaborators relating to the Level II data
distribution.
