Community Outreach
- Planned and co-chaired two AMS sessions held during the Annual Meeting,
9-13 February 2003
- With Rajul Pandya, co-chaired Education-IIPS Digital Library Symposium
- Co-chaired IIPS Symposium on Internet Applications and Web Portals with
Nancy Soreide
- Co-chair of AMS-IIPS for 2003-2006
- Currently working with Paul Hemenway and Peter Cornillon (DODS-OPeNDAP)
to plann and coordinate a technical workshop to be held in Boulder, 19-21
March 2003
- Coordinated with Unidata Users Committee Chair, and several Unidata staff,
in preparation of the DeSouza Award, presented to Tom Whittaker, University
of Wisconsin-SSEC, Madison, at the AMS Annual Meeting in Long Beach on 11
February 2003
- Working with the 2003 summer workshop committee on speaker nominations,
etc.
Case Studies and DODS
- Yuan Ho continues to divide his time between the Case Studies and DODS
support
- Support for the case study project by the NWS officially ended at the
end of FY02 (Sept 02)
- Carry over from above funding allowed us to continue making case studies
available, both from COMET, and by developing and building three cases
thus far, based on data on the <motherlode> server at NCAR (see
Case
Study status report, submitted by Jeff Weber and Yuan Ho)
- Ethan Davis is dividing his time between DODS and THREDDS (see DODS-OPeNDAP
status report by Ethan Davis and Yuan Ho)
- Worked on two NASA-REASON proposals for funding - both related to the DODS-OPeNDAP
system (Univ of RI, PMEL)
- If successful, Unidata will continue the provision of support and some
OPeNDAP development and coordination with THREDDS
- Jeff Weber is dividing his work schedule between Case Studies, IDD-LDM support
(including SuomiNet), and general Unidata support. Jeff is also representing
Unidata with Ben Domenico in GIS-related activities (see IDD status report
by Jeff Weber)
Data Access and Distribution
- Continued support and coordination with CRAFT, and subsequently the NWS
Level II NEXRAD data distribution scenario
- Organized a meeting with Guy Almes, Chief Engineer, Internet2, on 27-28
January (equivalent to one-day), to discuss collaboration with NWS and
CRAFT to make Level II WSR-88D data available using LDM technology
- Coordinating with Bob Gall, USWRP, for a CONDUIT working group meeting to
be scheduled in March-April timeframe
- Might include interested CRAFT stakeholders to integrate the two projects
into one cohesive whole
- NOMADS coordination continues. Jim Steenburgh, Unidata Users Committee will
represent Unidata users needs and requirements
Miscellaneous
- Advocacy - Letters from the Unidata community and UCAR director,
Rick Anthes, were sent to support continued provision of ACARS data. The NWS,
FAA, and the airlines have agreed to share the cost of the service.
- Met with Bill Bendell, Renate Brummer, and Sean Madine, FSL, for updates
on FX-Net.
- Assisted PIs and researched some issues pertaining to the (Linked Environments
for Atmospheric Discovery) LEAD proposal
