October 1997

97.10.1:

The UPC will write an article on the NOAAPort data issues in the next Unidata Newsletter.

97.10.2:

Unidata should inform the community of the impending changes to the floater channels.

97.10.3:

Fulker will discuss interagency connections with EPA through NSF.

97.10.4:

Jennie Moody will send the URLs for the EPA site to the Committee.

97.10.5:

Tony Rockwood will draft a resolution concerning access and distribution of level II data and send the resolution via email to the Committee for consideration.

97.10.6:

Ben Domenico will contact Harry Edmon to find out the arrangement that the Univ of WA has to access the local radar.

97.10.7:

Sandra Nilsson will contact the AMS about the workshop being highlighted as a colored cover for the BAMS.

97.10.8:

The deadline for the BAMS section rewrites is 31 Oct.

97.10.9:

Melanie Wetzel will work with COMET to create illustrations for the workshop article and cover.

97.10.10:

Committee work will begin on the optimum approach to use for contacting the workshop participants to assess the value and application of the information gleaned from the summer workshop.

97.10.11:

Ben Domenico will work with Mary Marlino, PAGE, to find out how and when to assess the workshop materials, including the students' reaction and usefulness.

97.10.12:

Mary Marlino will be invited to the March Users Committee to provide a report on assessment criteria. Mary will be asked to provide an update on the progress of the PAGE Focus Groups.

March 1997

97.3.1:

Reacting to a discussion about keeping the community informed, it was agreed that Unidata would continue sending email announcements to the community about upcoming UserComm meetings, including topics for discussion, prior to each UserComm meeting.

97.3.2:

Fulker was asked to send a community announcement referencing the URL link to Unidata's five-year proposal, after it has been finalized and sent to the NSF.

97.3.3:

Unidata should seek access to the FSL-NOAAport archived data using LDM technologies.

97.3.4:

Unidata should follow the progress of the EOSDIS and any parallel development taking place for client-server development using netCDF. EOSDIS DAAC in-a-box should also be tracked.

97.3.5:

Sandra Nilsson should contact WSI to check on an amendment to the contract to use NIDS after four hours, rather than the 48 hours currently required.

97.3.6:

Unidata should clarify the status of the Space Science & Engineering Center (SSEC) plans for OS/2, including specific dates of sunset plans for OS/2, if they exist.

97.3.7:

Fulker was asked to forward the OS/2 Resolution to the Policy Committee as soon as possible for their response.

97.3.8:

To provide cross fertilization, the Unidata UserComm would like to have a representative as liaison at the Policy group meetings for GREATT, and would like a GREATT Policy group representative to be a liaison at the Unidata UserComm meetings.

97.3.9:

The UPC will create an email list for Linux users and track the community interest using Linux and Solaris x86.

97.3.10:

Unidata should add a link to a page of resources to be used for the workshop.

97.3.11:

Mike Schmidt will check the GIS software packaging and licensing issue.

97.3.12:

Unidata will survey sites to find out which ones are losing the 4km data. In addition to this issue, Unidata will query the sites about adding the statistics to their IDD site information to make tracking easier at the UPC.

September 1996

96.9.1:

Steve Mullen will take the report on south of the border participation to the Policy Committee for discussion and action.

96.9.2:

A reminder will be sent to the university community about selection of floater locations. An article will also be written for the next Unidata newsletter.

96.9.3:

Unidata should explore the idea of using the IDD for distribution of the MM5 model data from sites that are using the MM5.

96.9.4:

Unidata needs to keep the community apprised through e-mail and Unidata newsletter articles about the future directions being planned.

96.9.5:

Ben Domenico and Linda Miller should continue contacting (via e-mail or telephone) site representatives to find out if Unidata systems are being used for interdisciplinary activities within their institution or in collaborative activities.

96.9.6:

Dave Knight, representing SUNYA, wants to be included in the seismic data real time experiment with IRIS sites using the LDM. Ben will arrange this with Tim Ahearn and other participants.


May 1996

96.5.1:

Steve Mullen will talk to Cliff Jacobs, NSF, about facilitating membership in Unidata to south of the border (Mexican) sites. He will check on possible funding mechanisms from the Inter-American Institute to support such an activity.

96.5.2:

Unidata will pursue working toward a resolution to the issue of facilitating easier access for potential users of NIDS.

96.5.3:

Melanie will write up a recommendation for distribution to the User Committee on satellite products for consideration for the next fiscal year.

96.5.4:

Unidata will follow up with CIMMS and SSEC to make arrangements for sounder research product availability.

96.5.5:

Unidata will continue discussions with Jim Purdom and Deb Molinar to see if it is possible to add the RAMSDIS data to the Unidata IDD distribution.

96.5.6:

Unidata will monitor the Unidata/Wisconsin datastream related outages at SSEC; the frequency of such outages will be reported at the next meeting.

96.5.7:

Unidata will draft a plan to alleviate IDD traffic delays and solicit community feedback prior to making changes to the current IDD stream.

96.5.8:

Unidata should coordinate a demonstration of other systems for archive capabilities. Suggested sources included: IRIS (Tim Ahearn), DODS, EOS DAACs (Steve Cox), FERRET at Pacific NW Lab (Steve Hankin), Lamont Doherty at Columbia Univ, CDC (Jim Brown), NCDC and HARVEST (Richard Chinman). The demonstration should take place at the next meeting.

96.5.9:

Unidata needs to find out if there are redistribution constraints of data from collocated university/NWSFO offices.

96.5.10:

The Chair of the Policy Committee suggested that the UserComm consider how well Unidata is doing and what the unmet needs are for the strategic planning discussion at the Policy Committee's next meeting. No immediate action was taken on this issue.

96.5.11:

A COMET liaison should attend future workshop-related User Committee meetings.

96.5.12:

Unidata will check with COMET for use of their classroom and to verify the dates of 23-27 June 1997.

96.5.13:

The UPC will create a draft proposal to the NSF and COMET for funding of the 1997 Summer Workshop and circulate it to the Users Committee.

October 1995

95.10.1:

Fulker will check to see if there's a GIS package using netCDF

95.10.2:

Fulker will pursue the question of NIDS product availability for special field projects with WSI

95.10.3:

The question of expanded support to field projects and supplying additional data should be included in the next Users Committee community survey

95.10.4:

Unidata should create WWW information and include an article in EOS bulletin about Unidata presence at the AGU meeting in December

95.10.5:

The UPC should provide feedback on applications packages and decoder status. UPC needs to maintain information on the WWW on the development of decoders, netCDF, and information about McIDAS and plans for GEMPAK

95.10.6:

Write newsletter article asking users to share their solutions to NWS datastream changes and any other software solutions they have developed to deal with data issues

95.10.7:

Can NWS provide area forecast zones information? There is a need for elevation, lats/lons and types of observations in the NWS Gopher/WWW (Linda will continue work on this issue)

95.10.8:

A satellite sub-committee composed of Melanie Wetzel (Chair), Tom Yoksas, Paul Ruscher, Jennie Moody, Charlie Murphy, and Denise Laitsch, SSEC, was established with the following mission:

95.10.9:

Matt Hicks will create a "relative order of importance" form for community input on products. Matt will work with Melanie to create a usable format

95.10.10:

Sally will write (with Melanie and Paul) a newsletter article on the new products and describe RAMSDIS

95.10.11:

There is a need to advertise WWW pages which provide instructional information. These web locations should be announced to the community

95.10.12:

Sally will revise Minigrants proposal with Jim Moore and pass it by the committee via e-mail before sending to Cliff Jacobs

95.10.13:

Linda Miller and Don Murray will check with NCDC to see if they have updated station information available

95.10.14:

The UPC will develop a model caveat statement for universities to use Web pages that have weather data

95.10.15:

Jennie Moody will send an email to the Users Committee with a proposal on a summer 97 workshop

April, 1995

Recommendation: The User Committee recommended that Unidata postpone having a booth at the next AMS meeting, and attend the San Francisco AGU meeting to assess future presence there.

95.4.1:

Unidata will make the suggested changes to Unidata's available WWW information.

95.4.2:

The results from the survey on classroom displays will be placed in the WWW.

95.4.3:

A change to the satellite data stream which would include GOES-8 data will be announced by Unidata and be made in approximately 7-10 days, due to the desire for GOES-8 data. (Subsequently, this time-table has been pushed back to May 22nd due to technical delays and end of semester concerns)

95.4.4:

Unidata should arrange for a presentation from an SSEC representative to describe GOES sounder products at the next UserComm meeting.

95.4.5:

Unidata should provide information to the community about tutorial availability on McIDAS

95.4.6:

Unidata should provide information to the Unidata community on how to dump data into ASCII files.

95.4.7:

Unidata will ask Tim Spangler to pursue DMSP data availability from University of Alaska.

95.4.8:

The Unidata Director should focus on affordable NIDS prices for the community rather than redistribution rights.

95.4.9:

Unidata should analyze all requests for past data to see which sites are making the requests and the number of of such requests.

95.4.10:

The Unidata Director will prepare a white paper on data storage.

95.4.11:

Sally will propose procedures and criteria for a strawman for a mini-grants program to foster the creation and sharing of education (course-related) materials among the Unidata community for review by Users Committee.

Proposal: Unidata should support WXP through the 5.0 release and distribution.

95.4.12:

The Unidata Director should investigate the budget implications of the above proposal.

October 1994

94.10.1:

Sally Bates will summarize information on LCD panels and video display systems that would be useful for university sites. Sally will take the lead on soliciting this information from the community and post the results to Unidata's WWW server.

94.10.2:

Jim Moore and Sally Bates will create an article on the site survey results.

94.10.3:

Linda Miller will follow up on direct connect options for universities at NWS Headquarters.

94.10.4:

The UPC will set up an e-mail mailing list for FLOATER-NIDS subscribers only!

94.10.5:

Fulker should notify Russ DeSouza at Millersville of the User Committee decision for Millersville to administer the NIDS floater.

94.10.6:

A sub-group was formed to development a strawman GOES-8 wish list. The members are: Melanie Wetzel, Charlie Murphy, Paul Ruscher, Harry Edmon, Denise Laitsch, SSEC, and Tom Yoksas, Unidata Focal Point. The group will develop recommendations for the short-term and long-term plans.

94.10.7:

Linda Miller will check on availability of radar composite from NOAA (30 min to hourly)

94.10.8:

Send an acknowledgement of contribution to Dan Vietor from Dave Fulker and Bob Fox with cc to Dan's chairman, Ernie Agee. Dave will draft letter.

The User Committee will divide the Unidata sites list and telephone the site representatives to discuss their needs and obtain feedback on their relationship with Unidata.

A community e-mail reminder of each upcoming User Committee meeting will be disseminated to the community soliciting comments or issues that are relevant for the committee to discuss.
