We are pleased to announce the release of our first contributed COMET case study. Case study 014, Midwest Cold Season Synoptic Storm, was developed by Lynn McMurdie, U of Washington. It covers a storm, 17-19 October 1996, that is an example of "classical" cyclone development with some structure similar to the Norwegian conceptual model of storm development. Case 014 is now available for searching, browsing, and ordering for FTP download through the CODIAC WWW system. Case 014 was built to provide an example of the classic structures in many synoptic systems, and is especially useful for teaching these concepts to beginning-level students. Case 014 includes GOES-8 and -9 satellite imagery; NOWRAD composite radar imagery from WSI; surface and upper air observations; NCEP model data; and textual products from the NWS Family Of Services (FOS). Additional data was added by COMET to augment the satellite, radar and text product availability for this case through CODIAC. For a detailed description of case study 014 as well as a lab exercise and other training support documentation, see http://www.comet.ucar.edu/resources/cases/c14_17oct96/ To order case study 014 data, go to http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cgi-bin/codiac/projs?COMET_CASE_014 SEARCH, BROWSE, AND FTP ACCESS All of the individual datasets that are part of case 014 are available through the CODIAC system for searching, browsing, and ordering subsets of the data for delivery via FTP. Several datasets, in particular, those archived as GIF images or GEMPAK surface files, can be graphically browsed through the CODIAC web interface. 8MM TAPE STILL AVAILABLE If you want all or most of the data for this case study, we are still making an 8mm tape containing the entire case study available. The tape can also be ordered through the CODIAC system. For details on how to order a tape, see the web page: http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cometCases/faq.html#howGetTape E-MAIL LIST An e-mail list, casestudies@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, is available for people interested in case study data. The case studies list has been created to enable the community of case study users to communicate with each other. New capabilities and new case studies will be announced on the Case Studies mail list. For information on how to subscribe, go to: http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cometCases/mailList.html QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS If you have any questions or comments about this or other COMET case studies or about how to access the data through CODIAC, please send e-mail to support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx We are always interested in suggestions on how to make the case study data easier to access and more useful for the users. If you have any suggestions or comments, including what cases you would like to see available, again, please send e-mail to support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx For general information about this project, visit our home page: http://www.joss.ucar.edu/cometCases/ =============================================================== Ethan Davis Liz Page User Support/Software Engineer Case Study Meteorologist UCAR/Unidata NWS/OM UCAR/COMET edavis@xxxxxxxx epage@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
