Re: [cf-satellite] cf-satellite Digest, Vol 39, Issue 1

NOTE: The cf-satellite mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

Hi Aleksandar (and David),

Its great to hear from you especially on the subject of specifying netCDF-CF
extensions for the Geoscience Community.

During our time working on GSICS (ref: http://gsics.wmo.int), we both have
struggled to progress with this task and I welcome your (and David's)
initiative to work on this much needed improvement to support the usability of
geosciences data in user community.

We at EUMETSAT have implemented netCDF versions of our MFG, MSG and MetOp
products as the Data Centre Archive's common delivery format for our user
community.
For more information on what is available, please refer to the following
web-page:

http://www.eumetsat.int/website/home/Data/DataDelivery/EUMETSATDataCentre/NetCDFFormatforDataCentreProducts/index.html

Examples of these products can be found here (also examples of swath type data):

http://gsics.eumetsat.int/thredds/netCdfExamples.html

I've attached a draft documents list the CF standard names and units we have
used in our netCDF products.
I authored this document during their development with the support from our
instrument experts and engineers.
I hope this document is useful in the preparation of the CF extensions
proposals.
Please keep me informed on the progress made on this project.

Dear CF-satellite community:

The US National Science Foundation?s EarthCube program is funding a
project<http://earthcube.org/group/advancing-netcdf-cf> titled ?Advancing
netCDF-CF for the Geoscience Community? with the aim of preparing several
extensions to the current CF convention. One of the planned extensions is about
storing satellite swath data in the original instrument viewing geometry (often
times referred to as Level 1 and Level 2 data). This topic has been discussed
on the mailing list several times in the past and this time we intend to go all
the way and submit a proposal to the CF governing body. The proposal?s aim is
to support as many swath types as possible for data collected by any type of
instrument aboard satellites and aircraft, including unmanned aerial vehicles.

This message is a request for input. In order for the proposal to
comprehensively represent the current community practices in storing swath-like
data we are asking for examples of your netCDF files. The best is to send us
the output of a ?ncdump -h? command or point us to sample files accessible via
the Internet. All received samples will be added to the
github.com/diwg/diwg<http://www.github.com/diwg/diwg> collection. In case of
HDF5 files, send us the output of a ?h5dump -A? command.

The currently anticipated timeline is to prepare a draft proposal by the end of
2016 and invite community review. We will be posting important updates about
the progress.

Thank you!

Hi Alek,

Attached are a few ncdump examples of how the GHRSST L2Ps encode swath in
netCDF4/CF/ACDD/ granules.

Pg 47 described how swath data are encoded in L2P datasets in the GHRSST Data
Processing Specification version 2:
