The following is being sent on behalf of Steven Businger, Chair, Unidata
Policy Committee.
Together with my colleagues at Unidata, I write to invite you to submit
nominations for new members to serve on Unidata’s Policy and Users
Committees. Unidata provides data services, tools, and
cyberinfrastructure leadership to advance Earth system science, enhance
educational opportunities and broaden participation. Over time, these
two governing committees have provided important guidance in setting
goals, accomplishing objectives, and helping to set future directions
for the program.
The Policy Committee makes recommendations to the University Corporation
for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) President and the UCAR Community
Programs (UCP) Director on Unidata’s policies, goals and activities. The
Users Committee is the primary mechanism for gaining community feedback
on the effectiveness of the program. It solicits suggestions for changes
to data streams and tools, facilitates the exchange of ideas among
users, and provides input to the program on a range of user issues. In
general, the two committees meet twice per year. Travel support for
these meetings is provided by Unidata.
We are seeking new members who can contribute their time and energy to
consider and provide guidance on issues that affect the Unidata
community, including those who can help Unidata broaden participation
from universities and colleges serving underrepresented communities and
other geoscience areas (e.g., hydrology, oceanography, climate, and air
quality). As always, we also seek members who are familiar with one or
more of the Unidata activities (such as Internet Data Distribution/LDM,
netCDF, GEMPAK, IDV, McIDAS and THREDDS).
Descriptions of the two committees and their activities, lists of
current members, and summaries of past meetings can be viewed at:

Policy Committee http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/committees/polcom/ and
Users Committee http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/committees/usercom/.
In addition to the criteria noted above, members for both committees are
selected to represent a range of colleges and universities and serve
three-year terms. If you know people who would be willing and able to
serve, as well as be effective members for either committee, please send
their names (and e-mail addresses), along with a few sentences on their
qualifications to serve on the committee *by 17 July 2009* to:

Thank you for your interest.
