Add 'exactarch=1' to /etc/yum.conf to get your architecture and not both
i386 and x86_64 for the 64 bit machines. Learned this the hard way.

For what its worth, on RH6.0 there were a number of i686 packages
installed (glib, libgcc) that needed to be uninstalled and then
reinstalled with the proper architecture for the x86_84 system.
This was the culprit. By the way you can find all the i686 packages
installed on your machine by (as root) "yum list | grep 686".
