Pete,
"imginfo" is a JasPer library program (source is in
$NAWIPS/extlibs/JasPer/v1.900.1/src/appl/)
Section 4.4 of the JasPer Software Reference Manual
(http://www.ece.uvic.ca/~frodo/jasper/jasper.pdf
<http://www.ece.uvic.ca/%7Efrodo/jasper/jasper.pdf>) contains the
following short summary:
Synopsis
imginfo [options]
Description
The imginfo command displays information about an image. This command is
really only intended to be
used from shell scripts for testing purposes.
Very descriptive, huh? :)

Greetings. Looking for purpose and instructions on use of the
executable "imginfo" in the $GEMEXE dir.
We got as far as getting some help by typing "imginfo -help" and the
response was "usage: imginfo [-f image_file]" .. which we then tried
an "imginfo -f IR_20130731_2330" (an North American 4km IR image from
our $SAT dir) and received "unknown image format" and "cannot load
image". For fun we also tried "imginfo -f test.gif" (some random gif
image we have) and got the same response.
Checked gembud archives, GEMPAK page help, even GOOGLE, and the went
as far to find the source code to see if we could discern anything
further, but no luck.
