Warren,

Without Ubuntu experience I probably can't help much, but the NMAP2
interface uses Motif.  Before the latest open motif linux binary (2.3.3)
was released, motif needed to be built from source else NMAP2 toolbars and
menus would not display correctly. Since this sounds similar enough to the
problem you describe, I suggest building from source on Ubuntu (if you
haven't already).
