If I recall properly, ESRI shape files are only displayable if of type polygon;
points load but do not render properly.
Try buffering those points transforming them to small polygons, and load
again...

I stand corrected; when I used the data chooser as a "map file" and
pointed it at the ZIP file, it shows a bunch of straight lines -- not
points. Before I had tried using the .shp file directly -- also, I
was at home without the latest IDV...
