Hi Jim,
Just in case you haven't tried already ... have you checked for and installed
the latest driver package for your video card?
I know that in the past there have been issues with AMD/Radeon GPU's falsely
reporting that they don't support OpenGL >= 1.2 ...

I am attempting to run IDV on a Win8 box that has a quad core AMD processor

This version of Java3D can't query "textureWidthMax/textureHeightMax"
so they are being assigned the default values:
textureWidthMax: 1024
textureHeightMax: 1024
DefaultRenderingErrorListener.errorOccurred:
If images render as a 'grey-box', try setting these parameters to a lower
value, eg. 512, with '-DtextureWidthMax=512'
Otherwise check your graphics environment specifications
