[idvusers] help with createDisplay of windbarbplan code

I've only recently upgraded to IDV5.3, and I've discovered that I get
errors creating wind barb plan displays, for example...

field = makeTrueVector(u,v)
dc = createDisplay('windbarbplan',field,fieldLbl)

throws the following:
"ucar.unidata.data.DataDataChoice cannot be cast to
ucar.unidata.data.DerivedDataChoice"

I'm usually pretty good at troubleshooting my own code, but in this
instance, this code worked in IDV5.1 and now does not in IDV5.3, and I'm at
a loss.  What has changed?  Thanks!
