RedHat finally came out with a fix for the problem with X windows not
starting up properly, when you install it on a new machine (the buggy
program is called "anaconda"). As guessed, when it installed, it
wouldn't save the settings you used, and then wouldn't let you save
them...unless you did it manually on the first login as root. See:

If you are having trouble installing it on a new system. It doesn't
affect all systems, but it sure did affect mine when I tried to put it on!
